About the neighborhood

Old houses under the el

On the Queens side of the Brooklyn border, Woodhaven keeps one of the city's better collections of late-1800s and early-1900s housing: Victorian frame houses with porches near Forest Park, attached brick and wood rows closer to Atlantic Avenue, and prewar apartment buildings in between. The neighborhood was first laid out in the 1830s as a suburban retreat and grew up around the Long Island Rail Road and the Jamaica Avenue streetcar.

Jamaica Avenue, under the elevated J and Z trains, is still the commercial spine, home to long-running places like Neir's Tavern, one of the city's oldest bars, plus Popp's Restaurant and Schmidt's Candy. Street fairs on the avenue and annual parades on Woodhaven Boulevard are local traditions, and Forest Park's wooded slopes sit at the northern edge.
