About the neighborhood

A town unto itself

Hemmed in by cemeteries and rail corridors, Glendale functions almost as a town of its own in southwestern Queens. The name came from 19th-century developer George C. Schott, who imagined a valley of glens on what had been swampy farmland called Fresh Pond; the railroad then turned it steadily residential. Today the blocks hold early 20th-century rowhouses, semi-detached homes, and well-kept brick two-families, many with grassy front yards, while Myrtle Avenue still carries old-school bakeries, taverns, and butcher shops.

Forest Park defines the southern edge, its oak and hickory woods serving runners, cyclists, and families daily. The Shops at Atlas Park, an open-air center built on the old Atlas Terminal industrial site, handles retail, and a WPA-built library in Renaissance style anchors civic life. The Glendale Property Owners Association works to keep change gradual, which tells you plenty about the local temperament.
