About the neighborhood

Tennis lawns and garden streets

The Cord Meyer Company planned Forest Hills in the early 1900s as a leafy retreat from Manhattan, and the design still holds. Tudor and Georgian houses, brick townhouses, and pre-war apartment buildings with courtyards fill the blocks, while Forest Hills Gardens, a planned enclave in the garden city tradition, keeps its winding lanes and decorative streetlamps. The Long Island Rail Road and later the subway made the neighborhood a genuine commuter hub.

Tennis history runs deep here: the West Side Tennis Club's grass courts and Forest Hills Stadium once hosted the U.S. Open, and the stadium still draws concert crowds. Austin Street is the commercial spine, dense with cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, and Forest Park adds green space nearby.
