About the neighborhood
Brewing town on the harbor
Stapleton grew from an 1830s settlement on former Vanderbilt land into Staten Island's early commercial heart, its natural springs and cool caves drawing brewers and its piers busy with trade. That layered past survives in brick rowhouses and grand homes along St. Paul's Avenue, workers' cottages inland, and converted industrial spaces near the water, now joined by newer projects like the Urby complex.
Bay Street is the active spine, with restaurants and local businesses that have earned a reputation among food lovers, and the historic Carnegie library still serves the neighborhood. The biggest change is the shoreline itself: Stapleton Waterfront Park, created on the old Homeport naval base, reconnected residents to the harbor with landscaped paths and open views. From the Van Duzer Street ridge, the Manhattan skyline is part of daily scenery.
