About the neighborhood
Staten Island's high ground
Grymes Hill climbs above Staten Island's North Shore on steep, winding roads, and the payoff is the view: sweeping panoramas across New York Harbor to the Manhattan skyline. The name honors Suzette Grymes, whose 19th-century estate Capo di Monte, the Top of the Mountain, drew the island's elite to build along Howard Avenue. Some of those mansions still stand, joined by early-20th-century homes and garden apartments.
Wagner College occupies former estates at the center of the hill, keeping much of the green space open, and the wooded slopes of the Serpentine Ridge Nature Preserve stay wild. Hero Park sits within the neighborhood, Silver Lake and Clove Lakes Park are nearby for tennis and golf, and local bars and cafes cluster within a short walk of the residential streets.
