About the neighborhood
From summer retreat to hometown
Mastic began as a summer retreat and grew into a year-round hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, southeastern Suffolk County. Early twentieth-century bungalows, many adapted from seasonal cottages, mix with newer houses, and the small business districts along Mastic Road and Neighborhood Road stay deliberately modest, local shops rather than chains. The hamlet was once called Forge, and the Long Island Rail Road still ties it to the rest of the island.
The Forge River and Moriches Bay shape the setting, with marshland and shoreline nearby and ongoing ecological restoration work. The Poospatuck Reservation, home to the Unkechaug Nation, adjoins the community. Volunteer fire and ambulance companies organize much of local life, including annual school supply giveaways.
