About the neighborhood

From St. Johnland to the bluff

Kings Park, on Long Island's North Shore within Smithtown, took its name from the historic Kings County Psychiatric Center and began in the 1800s as St. Johnland, a settlement founded as a haven for orphans and war veterans. The railroad's arrival in the late nineteenth century built the hamlet around it; today Main Street carries a revitalized stretch of storefronts, decorative sidewalks, and shade trees, with older porched houses and mid-century ranches on the rolling streets beyond.

The outdoors is the standing draw. Sunken Meadow and Nissequogue River State Parks bracket the community with beaches, trails, and boat launches, and the Kings Park Bluff looks out over Long Island Sound. The Leo P. Ostebo Heritage Museum, the country's only school-community-managed heritage museum, and a volunteer fire department active since the early 1900s round out its civic core.
