About the neighborhood
Farmland renamed for a postmaster
First known as Waverly, this Suffolk hamlet took the name Holtsville in honor of a U.S. Postmaster General, having grown from scattered farmhouses after the Long Island Rail Road came through in the mid-1800s. Its streets mix postwar ranches and split-levels with newer contemporary homes, on land whose gentle rises still show its glacial past.
The Long Island Expressway and nearby train stations make the wider region reachable, and daily life is anchored locally: a fire department serving since 1929, the Ecology Center and parks, the Summerfield community's clubhouse, pools, and tennis courts, and senior living at The Bristal for older residents who want to stay.
