About the neighborhood
The hamlet the railroad grew
Holbrook began as farmland and forest, part of the seventeenth-century Islip Grange estate, and its name recalls the Old Brook that once ran through the area. The Long Island Rail Road's arrival in the mid-1800s, and the Expressway later, turned the hamlet suburban: today its streets mix mid-century ranches with newer colonials, and sidewalks made for evening walks.
Community institutions run deep here. The volunteer fire department has served since 1927, the Sachem Public Library anchors learning and events, and nature trails near Seneca Middle School give residents room to roam. With the Expressway, the railroad nearby, and MacArthur Airport on its western edge, getting around is easy, and revitalization plans aim to make Main Street more of a gathering place.
