About the neighborhood

Rowhouse blocks of southwestern Brooklyn

Borough Park's dense grid of early 20th-century row houses and modest brick apartment buildings began as farmland in the old Town of New Utrecht, and the name, chosen in 1898 as Brooklyn consolidated into Greater New York, promised a park within the borough. The elevated D train cuts diagonally through along New Utrecht Avenue, with stoops and brick facades setting the scale on the side streets.

Commercial life concentrates on 13th and 14th Avenues, where bakeries sell challah and rugelach and small shops fill the storefronts up and down the avenues. Parks and playgrounds offer green refuges amid the density, and Maimonides Medical Center and a dense network of schools and community institutions form the neighborhood's backbone.
