About the neighborhood
The Bay-street grid
Bensonhurst's stoops still do what stoops are for: modest brick rowhouses, prewar apartment buildings, and single-family homes line leafy side streets off broad commercial avenues, with the elevated D train rumbling along New Utrecht Avenue. Laid out in the late nineteenth century as "Bensonhurst-by-the-Sea," a planned suburban escape, it keeps the grid of "Bay" streets that recalls its resort-era origins.
Today 18th Avenue, also signed Cristoforo Colombo Boulevard, runs from old-school bakeries and pizzerias to dim sum parlors in a few blocks. The Sunday Greenmarket takes over Milestone Park with produce and pastries, and Bensonhurst Park's lawns, ball fields, and playgrounds look toward the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
