About the neighborhood

Whaling port, second act

Sag Harbor built its fortune as a nineteenth-century whaling port, and its historic district still shows it: close-set colonial and timber-frame homes with weathered shingles and stately porches, and a custom house that was the first of its kind on Long Island. The business district is on the National Register of Historic Places. Just east, the Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Ninevah Beach enclaves hold wooded lots, mid-century houses, and a tradition of community gatherings that goes back generations.

The arts carry the village's second act: Bay Street Theater performs year-round, the Sag Harbor Cinema anchors Main Street, and galleries fill the shopfronts. Preserves and greenbelts wrap the village with trails past glacial ponds, and the harbor keeps daily life pointed at the water, from sailing to shoreline walks at sunset.
