About the neighborhood

Five necks behind the hedges

Quogue's geography defines it: five historic necks of land on Long Island's southern shore, water on nearly every side, with the Atlantic's barrier beach beyond. An 18th-century farming and fishing settlement became a summer resort, and Quogue Street still reads that way, with shingle-style houses, gambrel roofs, and wrap-around porches set on deep lawns behind high hedges, some dating to the Victorian era.

The grand hotels of the resort days are gone, but their carriage houses and outbuildings survive as residences, and the village green, community hall, and Quogue Field Club carry the social traditions forward. Weathered shingles in Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and farmhouse styles echo the era when visitors arrived by stagecoach and later by train, and the Quogue Library hosts art exhibits and local storytelling. Summer residents tend to return year after year.
