About the neighborhood
Car-free summers on Fire Island
You arrive in Ocean Beach by ferry from Bay Shore, and in summer you get around on foot, by bicycle, or with one of the red wagons children pull down the sandy lanes: the village is car-free in season. Cedar-shingle bungalows and modern beach houses line the boardwalks, many with porches and outdoor showers, and Bay Walk carries the shops, restaurants, and bars.
Incorporated in the early twentieth century, the village has long drawn artists and writers, and summer runs on parades, dockside concerts, and art shows. Local ordinances, including restrictions on eating and drinking on the beach, keep the sand notably clean. Off-season, Ocean Beach shrinks to a small year-round community, which is either the drawback or the whole point, depending on the buyer.
