About the neighborhood

The Poor Man's Bermuda, rebuilt

They once called this stretch of Staten Island shoreline the 'Poor Man's Bermuda,' a summer resort of wooden piers, hotels, and bungalow rows. Most of that era is gone, but restored bungalows still sit beside postwar homes and newer builds on quiet streets running down to the water, and residents still find old bottles, coins, and pier fragments in the sand.

The waterfront today is parkland, with protected dunes and wetlands, fishermen in the surf at dawn, and room to gather at Corporal Allan F. Kivlehan Park and Miller Field. This is a neighborhood that has rebuilt after storms more than once, and it wears that endurance plainly.
