About the neighborhood

Small-town Queens, deep roots

Maspeth's roots go back to a colonial settlement on Newtown Creek in the early seventeenth century, its name taken from the Mespeatches people and said to mean overflowed by the tide. The housing in this western Queens neighborhood is modest and mostly 1930s vintage: Tudor-style Nassau Heights clusters, orange and yellow brick rows built by the Mathews Company, and former barns turned garages. Grand Avenue is the commercial heart, with bakeries, diners, and markets.

Green space comes in small doses at Frank Principe Park and Maurice Park, and hilltop Mount Olivet Cemetery is unexpectedly tranquil. Street names like Melvina Place and Plank Road carry the older layers, and residents have repeatedly organized to defend the small-town feel. Film crews know it too; the Goodfellas Diner is here.
