About the neighborhood

Newtown's global crossroads

Elmhurst began as the 17th-century village of Middleburgh, later Newtown, and the long past still shows: Newtown High School's Flemish Renaissance Revival facade rises over streets of 1920s apartment houses, attached brick homes, prewar rowhouses, and newer condominiums along Broadway and Queens Boulevard.

Today it is one of the city's great crossroads. Storefronts crowd Corona and Roosevelt Avenues, and bakeries, dumpling shops, and open-air markets keep the sidewalks busy. Elmhurst Park, built where iconic gas tanks once stood, adds open lawns and play space, and the neighborhood's mutual-aid networks during the pandemic showed how tightly its blocks hold together.
