About the neighborhood

Brooklyn at the ocean's edge

At Brooklyn's southeastern tip, Manhattan Beach occupies a peninsula between Sheepshead Bay and the open Atlantic. Large detached homes in Mediterranean and Colonial Revival styles sit back on generous lots, some rebuilt as spacious modern houses, along streets radiating from Oriental Boulevard toward Manhattan Beach Park and its public bathing beach. The area began as a Gilded Age resort built by Austin Corbin in the late nineteenth century before settling into a residential enclave.

There is no subway stop on the peninsula; most residents drive or walk to Brighton Beach for transit, which keeps the streets unusually quiet. Active neighborhood associations carry much of the local life, and Kingsborough Community College holds the eastern tip, bringing students and events. Best for those who will trade transit for calm.
