About the neighborhood

Under the lighthouse since 1912

An octagonal lighthouse has swept its beam over this Staten Island hilltop since 1912, and it gave the neighborhood its name; earlier, the area was known as Richmond Hill. The winding lanes have no sidewalks, and no two houses match: colonial manors, Tudors, and Victorians share the hill with mid-century designs, including Crimson Beech, the only Frank Lloyd Wright residence in New York City. From certain streets the views run to the harbor and the Manhattan skyline.

Woods and the surrounding greenbelt give the hill a near-rural feel, though Richmond Road and the expressway are close. Historic Richmond Town, a living museum of preserved buildings, sits nearby, and the hill once held a nineteenth-century finishing school that later became a grand hotel. The trade-off is car-dependence; the reward is elevation, privacy, and trees.
