About the neighborhood
The garden suburb that went global
Jackson Heights was built as an experiment: in the early 1900s the Queensboro Corporation turned the farmland of Trains Meadow into a planned garden suburb, and its signature remains the early twentieth-century garden apartments clustered around private landscaped courtyards. Many of those brick buildings are protected within the Jackson Heights Historic District, alongside stately co-ops and row houses north of Roosevelt Avenue.
The neighborhood layered on from there. The shopping streets built up in layers: 74th Street holds sari shops, jewelers, and spice markets, while bakeries and restaurants fill the storefronts along 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue, the two main commercial corridors. Major subway lines make it one of the more connected corners of Queens, Travers Park hosts concerts and farmers markets, and the leafy side streets stay surprisingly calm.
