About the neighborhood

The Printing District reinvented

Wedged between the Hudson River and SoHo, Tribeca, and the West Village, Hudson Square was long known as the Printing District, and its high-ceilinged loft buildings now hold creative agencies, media and tech offices, and design studios. The Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District preserves early nineteenth-century Federal and Greek Revival row houses beside them, and the past runs deeper still: George Washington headquartered here, and in the late 1970s and 80s the Paradise Garage made the area a center of LGBTQ+ nightlife.

New residential towers have risen among the landmarks, and recent master plans added trees and small green spaces to streets built for trucks. Hudson River Park is steps away for sunsets over the water, and the Ear Inn, in one of Manhattan's oldest buildings, still pours. Despite the busy neighbors, the area keeps an under-the-radar calm that residents guard.
