About the neighborhood

The brickmakers' riverfront village

Haverstraw's bricks built much of New York, and the village still wears that legacy: ornate brick facades and Victorian homes downtown, many crafted from the local clay that once made this the Brickmaking Capital of the World. The name, an old term for oat straw, dates to the area's colonial past, and the town's history runs from Revolutionary War lookout through early utopian experiments to industrial hub on the Hudson in northern Rockland County.

Today the downtown is in mid-revival, with restored storefronts, pocket parks, farmers markets, and festivals, and longtime residents and newcomers alike. The riverfront and Bowline Point Park give residents open space and Hudson views, while the Garner Arts Center and the Haverstraw Brick Museum keep the creative and historical threads active.
