About the neighborhood
A lake named for England
Grasmere Lake, spring-fed and circled by trees, gave the neighborhood its name, borrowed from England's Lake District by founders after a pastoral retreat at the city's edge. Shipping magnate Sir Roderick Cameron established the early estate around the water, and the Staten Island Railway later opened the area to commuters. Today the streets carry Tudors, center-hall colonials, cottages, ranches, and the occasional Mediterranean-style stucco villa with arched entries.
Hylan Boulevard handles the practical side with restaurants, markets, and everyday services, while the expressway and railway station connect to Manhattan and Brooklyn. Clove Lakes Park and South Beach sit close by. Between the wooded buffers and the lake, it feels further from the city than it actually is.
