About the neighborhood
Nieuw Amersfoort's long afterlife
Founded in the 17th century as Nieuw Amersfoort, Flatlands fed Brooklyn and Manhattan from its farms for generations. Today the southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood reads as almost suburban: wide streets of low-rise single- and two-family houses, brick or stucco with porches, driveways, and small yards, with a handful of historic sites surviving from the farming era.
Kings Highway and Flatbush Avenue hold the commercial strips, from roti shops to classic pizzerias, many family-run for decades. Newer arrivals have joined long-established households, and block associations keep lawns and seasonal decorations a point of pride. Amersfort Park, Hendrickson Playground, and a library active since the 1940s round out a steady, unshowy corner of the borough.
