About the neighborhood
New York's smallest village
New York's smallest village by population, Dering Harbor occupies the northern edge of Shelter Island, incorporated in 1916 specifically to keep commercial amusements away from its shoreline. Victorian gingerbread cottages and Queen Anne, Tudor, and neoclassical homes survive from its 19th-century resort era, when the grand Manhanset House hotel drew military leaders, financiers, and Broadway names until it burned.
The marina, with its white docks and sailboats, centers village life, offering sailing, kayaking, and fishing, while the Dering Harbor Inn adds tennis courts, a pool, and harborside grounds. Protected woodlands and meadows adjoin the harbor. With so few homes, neighbors know one another by name; the trade-off is remoteness, and most residents consider that the point.
