About the neighborhood

The Flossy, by the bay

The Canarsee, a branch of the Lenape, fished and farmed these shores, and their name, meaning fenced place or fort among the reeds, still describes the marshes at the neighborhood's edge. Canarsie went from colonial farming village to fishing town to summer resort before the postwar boom filled it with sturdy one- and two-family homes; older houses from the 1910s and 1920s survive north of Flatlands Avenue. Wide streets and detached homes with real yards give it a suburban feel rare in Brooklyn.

Bakeries and annual celebrations are fixtures, and residents call the place The Flossy. Canarsie Pier draws anglers and strollers on Jamaica Bay, Canarsie Park covers sports fields and a skatepark, and the Brooklyn Terminal Market handles fresh produce and flowers. Families tend to stay for decades.
