About the neighborhood

Crossroads with a tavern name

A colonial inn called the Bull's Head Tavern once stood at Victory Boulevard and Richmond Avenue, and its painted signboard named the neighborhood. Bulls Head stayed farmland and orchards until the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in the 1960s, when families arriving from Brooklyn and Queens filled new residential streets where the fields had been.

Today single-family homes, townhouses, and low-rise apartments fill compact blocks, with Victory Boulevard as the commercial spine: family-run restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and everyday services. Willowbrook Park's wooded trails and ballfields sit on the eastern edge, and Freshkills Park, the former landfill now becoming meadows and wetlands, unfolds to the southwest. Unpretentious and steady is the local style.
