About the neighborhood

From Modern Times to today

Brentwood began in the mid-19th century as a utopian experiment called Modern Times, a settlement organized around communal living and progressive ideals. The Suffolk County community that grew from it, in the Town of Islip, now reads as classic Long Island: mid-century ranches and Cape Cods beside newer builds, mature trees over residential blocks, and a lingering scent of pine from its days as a retreat from the city.

Today Brentwood is one of Suffolk County's largest hamlets, with busy shops and restaurants along its main corridors. The Brentwood school district and public library anchor civic life, and Brentwood State Park, on former Pilgrim State Hospital grounds, supplies athletic fields. A volunteer fire department dating to the late 1800s and the Long Island Rail Road round out a place that balances suburban calm with real connection.
