About the neighborhood

Factory town turned art town

Beacon runs along the east bank of the Hudson with Mount Beacon rising directly behind it, the mountain's trails and overlooks a short trip from downtown. The name recalls Revolutionary War signal fires on the Fishkill Mountains, and the mill-town past survives in Lower Main Street's brick facades and former factories, many converted to lofts, galleries, and studios.

Dia:Beacon, the contemporary art museum in a sprawling former factory, set off the city's cultural turn, and Main Street now carries galleries, independent shops, a farmers market, and events like the Beacon Pumpkin Festival. Riverside Fishkill Landing sits closest to the train and the gallery scene, the Mount Beacon side is closest to the trails, and Beacon Hills is the quietest residential pocket. Trains and ferries connect the city to the wider Hudson Valley and New York City.
