About the neighborhood

Where the railbed became a trail

Set between the Sprain Brook and the Saw Mill River, Ardsley began as a farming hamlet called Ashford and grew into a commuter village after the railroad arrived in the late nineteenth century. The trains are gone, but the South County Trailway now follows the old railbed, a leafy corridor for walking and biking. The compact downtown, rebuilt after a 1914 fire, holds restaurants, a classic town clock, and a modern supermarket, with housing that ranges from stately homes to woodsy pockets and the gated Boulder Ridge community.

Nine town parks and more than sixty acres of parkland leave room for soccer, picnics, and quiet walks, and the village holds Clean Energy Community recognition for its conservation efforts. The name itself traces to the ancestral home of the Field family.
