About the neighborhood
Tree City with a rail line
Named for the brook that winds through it, Valley Stream is a Nassau County village that grew from nineteenth-century farmland into a full suburban community. Early twentieth-century houses with porches and tended lawns share the streets with newer homes, and the Gibson section carries the name of the developer who pitched the area to commuters. Rockaway Avenue remains the commercial heart, lined with small businesses and cafes.
Local lore runs deep, from 'Rum Junction' to 'Cookie Hill,' kept alive by the Valley Stream Historical Society. The village green and community garden host movie nights and an annual car show, Hendrickson Park covers picnics and play, and a Tree City USA designation shows in the mature canopy overhead. The LIRR makes Manhattan a quick trip; the beaches are close the other way.
