About the neighborhood

A village named for Maine

William R. Grace, once mayor of New York City, named Thomaston for his wife's ancestral home in Maine, and the village, incorporated in 1931, holds the southeastern corner of the Great Neck Peninsula. Its winding roads, including Grace Avenue and Colonial Road, carry multi-generational homes and early buildings in the Tudor Revival style, such as the old Belgrave Motors showroom.

The village runs its own affairs from a hall built in the early 1970s, an independence residents chose at incorporation and still prize. Northern Boulevard plus nearby train and bus routes keep the wider Great Neck area and the city within reach, while the blocks themselves stay quiet and residential, the kind of place where residents settle and stay.
