About the neighborhood
Where the Gold Coast lingers
Hilly enough that locals call it the Switzerland of Long Island, Roslyn Harbor rolls down wooded, glacially shaped slopes toward Hempstead Harbor. The village grew out of Long Island's Gold Coast era, and grand former country estates still set the tone: stone facades, ornate gates, and sweeping lawns, with newer homes fitted in around them. It incorporated in the early 20th century out of a wish for self-determination.
Two estates now serve the public. The Nassau County Museum of Art occupies one, surrounded by sculpture gardens and walking trails, and Cedarmere, once home to poet William Cullen Bryant, is a park and preserve for lakeside walks. Boating and kayaking come with the water, and social life runs to garden parties and village hall events rather than spectacle.
