Developers planned Pelham Gardens as a garden suburb after Pelham Parkway and expanded transit reached the northeastern Bronx, on land once tended by the Siwanoy and later given over to estates and market farms. The housing that resulted, mostly brick and stucco single- and two-family homes from the 1930s through the 1950s, still sets the tone: broad quiet streets, shallow front lawns, and little through traffic on blocks like Laconia and Narragansett Avenues.
