About the neighborhood
A governor's estate, then a village
A royal governor started it: Thomas Dongan established his estate here in the late seventeenth century, on what is now Lakeville Road. Today New Hyde Park is a Nassau County village of brick colonials and Cape Cods on tidy lots, softened by mature trees and pocket parks, with the Northwell Health complex on the horizon drawing plenty of professionals to the area.
Jericho Turnpike and Hillside Avenue carry the commercial life, mostly small shops and pizzerias where owners learn regulars' orders, and the Inn at New Hyde Park has hosted generations of weddings and milestones. Local schools and the library district anchor family life, and an active chamber of commerce keeps the civic calendar full.
