About the neighborhood

A private waterfront peninsula

A private enclave on a Queens peninsula, Malba was founded a century ago by Maycock, Alling, Lewis, Bishop, and Avis, whose initials form its name. The founders' charter still keeps businesses and multi-family buildings out: no storefronts, no billboards, no apartment houses, only single-family homes along winding streets like Malba Drive and Powell's Cove Boulevard that follow the waterfront instead of a grid. Early twentieth-century Victorians sit beside brick split-levels and newer waterfront houses, many with windows framing the Whitestone Bridge, all under the Malba Association's oversight.

Daily life is quiet by design. Residents gather at Powell's Cove Park, where egrets work the tidal wetlands, and at Francis Lewis Park beneath the bridge; the Woman's Club and Garden Club keep social life going. Shops and restaurants sit outside the enclave, in nearby Flushing and Bayside, a trade-off many here consider the point.
