About the neighborhood
Factories to skyline views
Warehouses and factories built this neighborhood, which was incorporated as its own city in 1870, and their brick facades and arched windows still stand among the glass residential towers that came later. The former industrial waterfront is now Gantry Plaza State Park and Hunters Point South Park, with the Manhattan skyline directly across the East River and the Pepsi-Cola sign preserved as a landmark.
MoMA PS1 anchors one of the city's densest concentrations of galleries and studios, and murals and repurposed industrial spaces keep the creative energy visible. The Hunters Point Historic District and the old Long Island City Courthouse preserve the earlier eras. Multiple subway lines, ferries, and the Queensboro Bridge make the rest of New York unusually reachable, which is much of the point.
