About the neighborhood
Where the UN once convened
A kettle lake gives this North Shore village its name and identity; the water may once have carried an earlier name meaning a place of ease. Tree-lined streets hold a mix of classic estates and contemporary homes arranged around a private golf club, and the overall effect is park-like and calm. The history is unusual: William K. Vanderbilt II built on the lakeshore, the Sperry Gyroscope Company drew thousands of workers during World War II, and the United Nations made the village its temporary home while its Manhattan headquarters was built.
Today corporate campuses and medical centers share the village with its residential streets, and major roadways make Manhattan and the rest of Long Island reachable. Residents get their own police force, a clubhouse, a fitness center, and a village pool that anchors the summer.
