About the neighborhood
Behind the London gates
A gated entrance modeled on the gates of London's Kensington Gardens announces this small Great Neck Peninsula village, planned in the early 1900s from farmland as a purely residential enclave. Homes in a range of traditional revival styles line its tree-shaded streets, and zoning has kept commerce out entirely, preserving the original design intact.
Kensington incorporated in 1921 and still runs its own affairs, down to a dedicated village police department. The waterfront park, deeded to the community more than a century ago, holds a historic sand beach, a boat dock, tennis courts, and one of the region's largest freshwater pools. It is a deliberately quiet place, close to Manhattan yet insulated by design.
