About the neighborhood

Queens began here

Few neighborhoods carry as much civic history as Jamaica, Queens: it began as an early trading path, became the colonial settlement of Rustdorp, and grew into the first incorporated village in Queens and the original county seat. That past shows along Jamaica Avenue in ornate sidewalk clocks and old bank buildings, at the King Manor Museum, once home to founding father Rufus King, and at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, a restored historic building given new civic life.

Today it runs on movement and commerce. Bakeries, markets, and restaurants line Liberty and Jamaica Avenues; subways, buses, and the Long Island Rail Road converge at Jamaica Center, making it a gateway to JFK and one of the city's most connected places. Rufus King Park, with its broad lawns, serves as the communal backyard.
