About the neighborhood
Five Towns hamlet on the bay
The southwestern corner of Nassau County's Five Towns, Inwood sits against Jamaica Bay and the Queens border, part hamlet, part gateway. Its streets carry modest bungalows and classic Long Island colonials, some showing their age, others updated, most of them single-family homes passed through generations of working-class ownership.
Inwood Park organizes the waterfront with athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, a roller rink, and a marina with a boat launch that puts the bay within reach of boaters and anglers. Settled in the 1600s by Jamaica Bay fishermen, the hamlet went by Northwest Point and Westville before taking its current name, and the Inwood Country Club, once host to major golf championships, remains. Shops and restaurants in nearby Cedarhurst and Lawrence fill in the rest.
