About the neighborhood
Stairways above the Harlem River
Steep hillside streets set Highbridge apart: stairways connect terraces of five- and six-story Art Deco and prewar apartment buildings to the avenues below, on the Bronx's western heights above the Harlem River. Woodycrest and Ogden Avenues keep grand old mansions from the neighborhood's days as a retreat, while brick rowhouses and brownstones recall its evolution as a home for working families.
The High Bridge, New York City's oldest standing bridge and a former aqueduct, now carries pedestrians into Manhattan. Down on Jerome and Anderson Avenues, eateries and local shops set the street's rhythm, community gardens fill former vacant lots, and Highbridge Park runs green along the river. The neighborhood first grew around the aqueduct's construction workers, who settled here in the nineteenth century.
