About the neighborhood
Grown from a seed catalog
Seed merchant John Lewis Childs built Floral Park on the flower farms and nurseries he ran here in the late 19th century, gave the former East Hinsdale its name, and served as the incorporated village's first president. The legacy is literal: streets carry names like Tulip, Violet, and Magnolia, and gardens are taken seriously each spring. Housing runs to Cape Cods, Colonials, and Tudors from the early and mid-20th century, set on an orderly grid with deep lawns and tree-lined avenues.
Tulip Avenue is the working main street, with local boutiques, family-owned eateries, street fairs, parades, and summer concerts. The village sits right on the Nassau County line where it meets New York City, so the Long Island Rail Road puts Manhattan within a straightforward commute while the blocks themselves stay quiet and small-town in temper.
