About the neighborhood
Bungalows at the city's edge
Far Rockaway takes its name from Rekowacky, place of our people, and has been remaking itself ever since: colonial outpost, Gilded Age resort, and now a resilient coastal neighborhood at the eastern end of the Rockaway Peninsula. The Far Rockaway Beach Bungalow Historic District preserves rows of 1920s one-story bungalows with porches and exposed rafters from its City-by-the-Sea era.
The housing runs wider than the bungalows suggest: Victorian mansions with broad lawns in Bayswater, sturdy brick apartment buildings, and modest houses in between. Central Avenue is the commercial spine, lined with shops and bakeries. On summer days the boardwalk fills with music and grilling, and the ocean sets the mood year-round.
