About the neighborhood

Greenwood Avenue, still the center

Bethel's walkable downtown is the draw: the Greenwood Avenue Historic District runs from Greek Revival houses with Doric columns to Italianate and Second Empire buildings, many of them former residences now holding shops, restaurants, and the public library, itself the old Seth Seelye House. The town grew as a farming community alongside Danbury, with small factories and local enterprise of its own.

The calendar does a lot of the work here: farmers markets, Bethel Summerfest, a winter tree lighting. Byrd's Books and the historic Bethel Opera House anchor the cultural side, and Meckauer Park adds a pond, pavilion, and walking trails. It is northern Fairfield County living at a village scale.
