About the neighborhood

Helen Marsh's model village

Helen Marsh built the Village of Bellerose from the gladiola fields of Floral Park in the early twentieth century, supervising the first houses herself and persuading the Long Island Rail Road to add the station that gave the village its name and its link to the city. The houses show that era's care: peaked roofs, brick facades, front porches, and hedged yards set back from the road.

Its Village Municipal Complex, including the Village Hall, Fire House, and Police Booth, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Compact and tree-lined, the village borders Queens to the north and Floral Park to the south, and many homes have stayed in the same families for generations.
