About the neighborhood
A London name in the Bronx
In the northwest Bronx, Bedford Park fills the blocks between Mosholu Parkway, Webster Avenue, East 196th Street, and Jerome Avenue. It began as a planned suburb named for its London counterpart, and Victorian houses with wrought-iron fences still stand along Bedford Park Boulevard and 198th Street; prewar apartment buildings and Art Deco facades on the Grand Concourse fill out the stock. The land once held the Jerome Park Racetrack.
The neighborhood is dense with institutions: Lehman College brings students and faculty, the New York Botanical Garden sits just beyond the border, and Harris Park and the Mosholu Parkway promenades supply green space. Commercial strips carry cafes, food stands, and small family businesses. Subway access keeps Manhattan reachable, while the streets themselves stay residential and comparatively calm.
